Here in the heartland, on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, life on the land is intimately married to the flow of the waters. That marriage of land and water is  embodied in our handcrafted spirits. We create liquors slow and pure. Born from the finest grains, sourced from local farmers, we know where every kernel comes from. What you’ll find in this bottle was made for you, not for for the masses.

We’re a family owned and operated company. We believe in stewardship of our land and water. We know that the family farm is an important part of our community and our culture here. And we believe in quality above all else.  It was important to us that our spirits would be local and authentic.  Even as we’ve grown, that remains the core of our brand.  We know our farmers, we know our customers and we are committed to doing it the right way.

We started in 2010 as a crazy idea between two brothers.  But our little distillery has grown into one of the top craft distilleries in the country.  WE now send our spirits to over 27 states in the U.S. and export to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany.

We might be bigger and make more than we did when we started, but our commitment to authentic craft spirits hasn’t changed.  Our hometown roots will always be the cornerstone of our growing business.

Grain to glass

We’re surrounded by some of the finest grain fields in the world. It only makes sense to make the finest spirits from that grain as well. We purchase farm fresh grain, directly from the farmers who grow it. 100% of our grains come from within 25 miles of our distillery.

Take our tour and you can see the entire process of spirit making from beginning to end. We’re one of a handful of distillers in the U.S. who take the “grain to glass” small batch distillation approach.  What “grain to glass” means is that we handle every step of the process ourselves, taking our fresh grain and make it into your favorite liquors.

We sort and clean the grain and then mill it into a flour-like consistency. We cook the grain to make our mash and then add yeast to let it ferment. We distill the fermented mash and then filter it and blend it to proof. From there, it either goes into a barrel or a bottle. We bottle our spirits by hand.

The important thing is that it is all done under our watchful eye, under one roof. We don’t outsource anything. It’s not always efficient but we pride ourselves on inefficiencies that result in a premium product. We know you’ll grow to appreciate our “grain to glass” approach once our spirits go from that glass onto your taste-buds!

Mississippi River Distilling Company started in 2010 after two brothers, Ryan & Garrett Burchett, decided to take a chance on a dream. What started as a crazy idea, grew into an opportunity to create something that these parts hadn’t seen since prohibition. A chance to create truly home grown, handmade spirits.

Our still

There’s nothing prettier than looking out over the Mississippi River from our distillery while watching the sunlight dance across the gleaming copper and stainless steel jewel that is our still.

Our still was handmade by Kothe Distilling Technologies in Eislingen, Germany and it is a remarkable piece of equipment. The best part about it is it provides us with the flexibility to make about any distillate we decide we put our minds to. We were fortunate enough to spend time in Germany training with some of Europe’s finest distillers to get the most out of our equipment.

We have affectionately named her “Rose” as she has the curves of a beautiful woman and is the true “River Rose” at our distillery.
